Gift ideas DIY for Father's Day

I love Father’s Day. It’s one of the most special days of the year for dads (and grandads), and the perfect time to show them how much we love them. I remember that, as a little girl, I always used to give my dad something I’d made from macaroni pasta shapes or plasticine, and how his happy face used to fill me with joy.

That’s why, this time around on the 19th of March, I’m going to forget about another tie or cologne and make something much more personal as I did when I was a child. How about you doing it as well? Here are ten fun DIY gift ideas made from materials available at our store in Mahón, that you can make yourself or with the help of your kids. Come onboard and let’s get to work!

MEMORY GALLERY

We all love gathering memories and there’s no better way of doing it than by creating this lovely memory gallery of photos which you can easily make yourself.

All you need is a frame, a ball of string, nails and clothes-pegs. First, cut four equal lengths of string that are a little wider than the frame. Then, nail the strings onto the frame, using a ruler if necessary to make sure that they are quite straight. Cut another length of string and attach it to the back at the top of the frame to hang on the wall. Finally, hang all those special photos on the strings with the pegs – you’ll love how great it looks!

Material: frame, ball of string, nails and clothes-pegs.

SMILING COASTERS

Look how easy and fun this is! Kids will love these DIY cork coasters. Get a sheet of cork and cut out circles with the help of a wide glass to guide you. Then, just choose your favourite emojis and copy them on to the cork. You can find templates too, but how about drawing them yourself or with your children to give them that extra personal touch? What do you think?

Material: sheets of cork, black marker pen and white paint.

A MUG WITH A DIFFERENCE

Dad’s coffee will taste that much better every morning with a personalised mug and really original touch. Want to know how to do it? You’ll need a plain white or pale mug, stickers and a permanent black marker pen. Take the stickers and write the letters for DAD or DADDY so that you can cut them out and stick them on the mug. That will be your template. Once the stickers are fixed, use a permanent marker pen to dot all around the letters. Achieve a really stunning effect by making the dots start in a concentrated mass by the letters and then gradually spacing them out more as you move outwards. Remove the stickers and see what a great mug you’ve created!

A SURPRISE JIGSAW PUZZLE

Forget about mobiles, TV and all those other distractions and enjoy a good game with the family! Yes? Well, this is a perfect DIY gift for you!

To make it, you’ll need a small wooden box, a 2 cm strip of wood and a special photo that you like. You can either find a box with a design that you like, or find a basic one to paint yourself in a favourite colour. You could even make your own box with strips of wood. Once you’ve got your box, cut up little 2x2 cm cubes from the wooden strip so that they fit well in the box. Sand the cubes so that they’re nice and thin and get ready for the fun. Get your photo and cut it into as many pieces as your cubes, and then glue them on and you’re done! One other great idea is to leave all the pieces loose so that you can have fun piecing it together as a family!

Material: small wooden box and a 2 cm strip of wood

FOR THE GARDENERS IN THE FAMILY

Keen gardeners are bound to love this perfect DIY gift for Father’s Day. Get a basic plant pot and spray-paint it in one colour. I recommend a dark colour to create a contrast. Once it’s dry, use a paintbrush to draw the outlines of your family on it, using a lighter coloured paint. You could also use stickers if you prefer.

For the little sign, take a rectangle of white card and stick it onto a larger piece so that it looks framed. Use the same colours as the pot for a great effect. Glue a small wooden stake to it so that you place it in the earth and bingo!

This is also great for family chefs, perfect for growing those herbs to lovingly add to their specialities. Such a lovely gift!

Material: plant pot, spray paint, white paint, card and wooden stake.

A PERSONALISED HAMMER

If the dad in your family loves DIY, you’re going to love this idea. Buy a special hammer, for example of a quality brand like Bellota which we stock at Jaype, and write a special message on the handle using a black or gold marker pen. Play around with words as we have on the hammer in the photo, such as: «For Dad, thanks for helping me to build my life». Inspiring, isn’t it? You’ll find loads of great phrases on the internet or even on templates. And, if your handwriting is attractive, you could do it adlib for a great effect!

Material: hammer and black or gold marker pen.

WHERE ARE THE KEYS?

Keep all keys to hand with this great wall key-holder. How about this fun moustache-shaped one? You can make it yourself with a wooden board and several hooks. First of all, draw the shape of your key-holder on the board, either using a template or your own design. Cut it out carefully with a hacksaw, especially the curled ends of the moustache, and then sand down before painting it. Once it’s dry, put the hooks in the bottom section and it’s ready to go. No more lost keys!

Material: wooden board, hooks and black paint.

TIME FOR BED EVERYONE!

This is such a nice DIY idea! A personalised pillow for Dad with your names on it for him to sleep with you all close to him at night! Great, isn’t it?

And look how easy it is! Get a white pillowcase and some different colours of fabric paint, such as the hues in a parchis board game (red, green, yellow and blue). Place the pillowcase flat on a surface and cover it with your palm-prints after you’ve wet your hands and dipped them in the various colours of paint. Press down carefully on the white fabric, using one or both hands to make your mark. When dry, use permanent fabric marker pens to add your names in contrasting colours under your palm-prints.

Material: white pillowcase and some fabric paint and marker pens in different colours.

SO HE DOESN’T LOSE ONE SINGLE NOTE

Is Dad one of those people who never knows where to jot down those messages and things to do? Well, here’s a perfect solution, with this chopping-board transformed into a notepad. All you need is a food-chopping board, some elastic bands and clothes-pegs, and paint in different colours to give him the best Father’s Day present ever.

Take the board and paint it in your favourite neutral colour. Then, with the help of a template that you’ve already prepared, draw a big moustache on the upper or lower section. Here are 4 different designs to choose from. Once it’s all dry, place the elastic bands around the board and attach a clothes-peg to them to make a perfect place to keep a pencil. To add to the fun, you can decorate the peg with a moustache too. After that, all we need is a stick-it notepad and we’re all set!

Material: chopping board, elastic bands, wood paint in two tones and clothes-pegs.

A BASE FOR KEEPING EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE

To finish off, here’s a really great idea to show off your skills with the basic tools to take of in the DIY world. People who love order will be delighted with this multi-purpose base, particularly with its personalised features.

You’ll need two wooden boards of 30x45 cm that are 3 cm thick, wooden dowels, carpentry glue and your DIY essentials. Start by dividing one of the boards into three sections with a ruler and pencil, drawing the special shape of this organiser while leaving space for a watch and a wallet. On the other board, mark out a rectangular piece of wood to keep a mobile on, and a bracket with a straight angle of 90 degrees to act as a support for the back. Cut the three pieces with a fretsaw and sand them down while also trying to round the corners off.

Personalise the main board with the word “Dad” or anything you like. You can do this with an engraver or simply a gold or silver marker pen. Then, mark the points to make holes for the dowels on each of the top corners to hang keys from, and three more at the bottom to hold the mobile support. Make the holes with a wood drill and, once you’ve applied glue inside, put two dowels in the top holes and two in the bottom, leaving the middle one empty.

Get your support for the mobile and make two holes in the back to line up with the ones on the big board, and also a notch for the central hole to place the mobile’s charger cable on. Apply carpentry glue and fix the support.

Then, glue the side of the bracket diagonally and fix it to the back section so that the board isn’t completely straight and the mobile is secure when placed on it. Damos cola de carpintero en la diagonal de la escuadra que habíamos preparado antes y la pegamos a la parte trasera, de forma que la tabla no quede completamente recta y así no se caiga el móvil al colocarlo encima. You could also varnish everything for a special finish. Want to give it a try?
