If you’re as romantic as me, I’m sure you’ve already started to think about what to give your partner on Valentine’s Day. What’s it to be? Chocolates, flowers, perfume… I don’t know about you, but buying the same old thing every year is a bit boring, isn’t it? That’s why, so that you can show that special person in your life how much you care, I’ve put together some great but simple DIY ideas for you to make as an original and fun gift.

Here at Jaype, we have everything you need, so get the tools for your basic kit and start enjoying the feeling of creating something special yourself. Your partner will be really touched and feel like the most important person to you.

How about some early-morning cheer with a lovely message to start the day with? All you need is a plain or subtly printed mug and a permanent marker pen for use on ceramics. Create your own design, look for an attractive template that you like or, if you’re feeling adventurous, write your message freehand for that extra personal touch.

Material: mug, permanent marker pen (suitable for drawing on ceramics) and a cardboard template.

Sofa, movie, popcorn… It’s lovely just snuggling up together on those cold winter nights, so how about keeping warm under a personalised blanket? Create your own design with hearts using a cardboard template and fabric paint. Choose a neutral colour for your blanket so that the design stands out and see how great it looks.

Material: blanket in a neutral colour, card and fabric paint.

If you like soft and romantic things, you’ll love this DIY idea. Choose a cushion with a plain cover and create your own design gluing coloured pom poms on to it – every time your loved one hugs it, he or she will think of you. Right on trend, Cupid would definitely approve!

Material: cushion cover, coloured pom poms and fabric glue.

INSCRIPTION ON A CANDLE

What more could you ask for than a candle radiating soft light on those romantic evenings? Here’s how to personalise your own candle in a very original way: engrave your initials inside a heart shape on a white candle and paint the letters in gold, using a piece of wood as a base or placing in in a glass jar. You’ll feel like you’re getting together all over again!

Material: candle and either a wooden base and/or a glass jar and gold paint.

This is one of the coolest DIY gifts and it’s a lot easier to make than you think! Using a wooden board, draw your own design and hammer nails in to follow the outline. Then the fun starts: choose your favourite colour of thread and criss cross it until the silhouette is covered with a mesh. What a great gift!

Material: wooden board, nails and thread.

THE MAGIC OF LOVE MESSAGES

Sometimes everyday routine takes over in our relationships, and we stop saying how much we love each other. So how about creating a bottle filled with love, or messages of love, to make your partner feel special every single day? Write personal messages on different pieces of paper, roll them up and put them in a glass jar. You can decorate the jar with red ribbon and individually seal each message to make it even more romantic.

Material: glass jar, paper or card, coloured marker pens or biros and red ribbon.

HANGING HEARTS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY

Finally, here’s another perfect DIY idea to fill your home with Valentine messages. Cut polystyrene into heart shapes and make a hole to run thread through and hang them up, or you could even create a mobile by using circular pieces of wood. Write your own messages on each of the hearts and voilà! Your love is covering the walls!

Material: polystyrene in heart shapes, red paint, red marker pen, black marker pen, circular pieces of wood and thread.
